The Southern Trinity Groundwater Conservation District was created to determine policy and regulate the withdrawal and use of groundwater within the boundaries of the District. The State of Texas has deemed this responsibility necessary to preserve our groundwater for years to come. In recent decades, withdrawal of groundwater has exceeded recharge of the aquifer by a significant amount. All Texas counties are required to participate in a groundwater conservation district by the year 2012. This conservation district has been designed and directed to assure Texas citizens the sufficient availability of drinking and irrigation water. At the current rates of unregulated withdrawal, the sustainability of the aquifer was sadly not a reality. The purpose of the District is to conserve, preserve, protect, recharge and prevent the waste of groundwater and to control subsidence caused by groundwater withdrawals. The Southern Trinity Groundwater Conservation District has within its boundaries the Trinity, the Woodbine and the Brazos River Alluvium aquifers.
